I've been lucky enough to work with all sorts of students: athletes, dancers, historians, scientists, tuba players. When it comes to writing, they all seem to have something in common:
They think they should be doing it differently.
If they are quick drafters, they think they should put more thought into their writing. If they tend to get stuck, they think the writing should flow more quickly.
Jack Kerouac was not a healthy person!
Self compassion is more efficient
See, I had terrible writer's block in my twenties, and I figured there must be something horribly wrong with me. It wasn't until I started writing my dissertation that I learned a trick. If I got up from my desk and took a walk while I dictated whatever issue I was stuck on, everything began to flow again. My insights on Christopher Marlowe flowed like water. Or, you know, molasses—something that moves!
There has never been anything wrong with me as a writer—I wish I'd known it sooner and simply accepted the way my mind works. I would have taken a lot more beautiful walks and hikes in college. At least I can do that now.
This week's video is for anyone who needs to write anything. As we embark on a new year, let's embrace what is over what could be. Highlights include:
✅ The two kinds of writers
✅ The Achilles heel of each type
✅ Why understanding your type can free you up
