I had been dating my boyfriend a few months when I asked him if he had ever gone skydiving.
This man, now my husband, was driving us down the freeway. He looked out the window, considering. He seemed to be thinking deeply, trying to remember. After a long moment, he said,
"Yes."
As if skydiving was something he needed to wrack his brain to recall.
As if falling out of the sky until he reached terminal velocity...wasn't very memorable.
Teenagers, too, routinely fail not just to mention, but to *remember* the extraordinary things they have done. I have had not one, but two students forget to tell me that they earned black belts in martial arts until just before they sent their college applications out. Two!
Earning a black belt is probably more compelling to colleges... than being secretary of your high school's rollerblade club
Parents are the keepers of the memories
See, I have worked with many parents who don't understand how vital their perspective is to the process. Their insights on the personality, dreams, talents of their student can make all the difference!
Latest video — What roles do parents play in the college application process?
In this week's video, I explain the three main roles that a parent can play when helping their kid get into college. Highlights include:
✅ How parents can save a lot of money by tapping into their intuition
✅ Why teenagers often forget and/or don't see what is most remarkable about them
✅ How to get your teen to listen to your ideas about colleges
I have noticed that parents often feel a lot of confusion about where they fit in the process. My hope is that this video helps clarify things and gives parents the confidence to listen to their intuition. In a time of tremendous external instability, we can't afford not to!
For families of high school juniors...
Now is an ideal time to start putting together an inspired college list. When you leave lots of time, the process can go from being stressful and chaotic to enlightening and fun. I promise!
